Brazilian Jiu jitsu at onedojo

At OneDojo, our BJJ Head Coach is Rob Goodson. Rob leads from the front and is very active on the competition front; he is a the student of 4th Degree Black Belt Jimmy Johnson.

Rob not only does he teach you a martial art, but he teaches you fundamental factors that can be used if you are looking to compete or for self-defence purposes.

BJJ will get you fit; there is no doubt that you will sweat and shed the pounds; you’ll also build and develop relationships with your peers, and those turn into fantastic friendships outside of the dojo

brazilian jiu jitsu gi classes

Wearing the gi gives you options; the first, it allows you to progress by earning stripes and building towards getting belts and one day that black belt, but it makes the martial art realistic as it gives you insights on how to use people’s clothes against them.

brazilian jiu jitsu nogi classes

Rashguards, body layers, and spats are the ideal clothing; the nogi is a bit smoother and a bit faster, and it compliments MMA students or those looking to compete at BJJ events/competitions.

brazilian jiu jitsu for adults

This is the one sport where age does not matter; injuries don’t prevent you from getting involved.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for women

We do not have any women-only classes; it is something we should have in place in the summer of 2023.

brazilian jiu jitsu for teens

As a teenager, depending on your size, attitude and other characteristics, you can participate in all teen lessons and be invited to participate in the adult lessons.

brazilian jiu jitsu for children

Classes are divided into ages 10-15 and 6-10.

Absolutely. It takes a lot to just walk through the door, so even if you want to just come and watch, then we've got somewhere for you to sit and be close to whats going on.

We encourage on your first visit to have a friend or family member to accompany you. It will help you relax, but if you don't, everyone is super friendly!

It's about being comfortable your very first time, so something you aren't worried about getting damaged and you can freely move around in.

That's fine. We pride ourselves on maintaining an environment in which anybody can train, free of judgment and regardless of ability or experience! We try to cater to every type of member, so if you just want to keep fit or learn some new skills, we are the perfect place! However, if you were interested in competing, we’re also able to offer that as well.

Upon signing up, you will have access to our club app (Wodify), from there you can view all classes and book in advance.

You are not under any pressure to join in, yes people will look at you, but that's because you're looking at them. Without realising it you've just walked into a room and everyone in it is a new friends, is someone you've got something in common with and understand what you're going through and how you're feeling.

Brazilian Jiu jitsu history

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or BJJ derives from Japanese jiu-jitsu and judo, imported to South America in the early 1900s, and its transformation into a new martial art style by a group of Brazilian pioneers.

Before it arrived in Brazil, the origins of jiu-jitsu are believed to go back thousands of years. Several theories concern its roots, but many agree that it can be traced back 4,000 years ago to Buddhist monks in India. It then spread to feudal Japan, developing into effective hand-to-hand combat before becoming more of an art form and a competitive activity.

Coming to brazil

In 1915 a world-famous Japanese judoka, Mitsuyo Maeda, arrived in Brazil, where he began teaching Jiu-Jitsu and Judo. Three of Maeda’s first students went on to become the founders of what is known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: brothers Carlos and Helio Gracie and Luiz França.

These pioneers contributed to developing what is now known as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu arrived in the United States in the early 1970s, but it was still relatively unknown until the 1990s when the UFC brought mixed martial arts to the mainstream. In 2002, Carlos Gracie, Jr. founded the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) holds organized Jiu-Jitsu competitions worldwide.
